The city of Liverpool borught 2005 to a close with a spectacular fire, water and laser display. The neoclassical St George's Hall building was lit up with dramatic flame effects, lights, lasers and pyrotechnics.
The New Year's Eve early evening show was organised to mark the end of Liverpool's third Capital of Culture themed year - Sea Liverpool 2005.
New Year's Day will herald the start of a new themed year - Liverpool Performs.
'Creativity and innovation'
The year is planned to be a celebration of Liverpool's outstanding reputation as a city of top class performances, from the football pitch to the recording studio, as the city builds up to being the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Spectators were advised to watch the display, which started at 1700 GMT and lasted for about 20 minutes, from St George's Plateau or Lime Street.
Councillor Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool City Council, said: "Liverpool has always put on a fantastic New Year's Eve display, but the 2005 show will really raise the bar in terms of creativity and innovation."
Professor Drummond Bone, chairman of the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "The past year has been packed with maritime-themed activity, making the most of Liverpool's sea-faring heritage.
"The New Year's Eve display will change the focus from maritime to performance, as we get ready for another action-packed 12 months of events and festivals."
