Students warned over fire calls
Students at Liverpool John Moores University
Evacuation is slower because of false alarms, firefighters say
Students in Liverpool are being targeted in a safety campaign after 50 calls were made to firefighters since the start of the new term.

Two students at John Moores University have been issued with fixed penalty notices - one for a hoax call, and another for activating a fire alarm.

A third has been fined 50 for breaking the glass on an alarm.

Firefighters say the false alarms have made evacuations slower, which could put lives at risk in a real incident.

Officers from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have visited halls of residence to talk to students about fire safety.

Since the new term began in September, firefighters have been called to university halls of residence more than 50 times, the vast majority of which have been false alarms.

John Davies, community fire safety manager, said: "We want to make sure students enjoy their time in Merseyside safely so we are organising this campaign to encourage them to act responsibly and take fire safety seriously."
