Hospital plans backed by council
Alder Hey plans for expansion into Springfield Park
The hospital says the plans will not compromise parkland
Plans to extend Alder Hey Children's Hospital into a nearby park have won the backing of Liverpool City Council.

Some residents and councillors had objected to proposals to take land from nearby Springfield Park.

But the trust said it had been assured by Council leader Warren Bradley that the authority would now give its backing at a meeting on 23 December.

It means the Royal Liverpool Children's NHS Trust can abandon plans to build a new 300m facility in Widnes.

Hospital bosses described the announcement as "the good news that we've all been waiting for".

Plans for the hospital's redevelopment had been amended in response to criticism that parkland would be lost.

Although the proposals won the backing of the council, they are still subject to planning permission and approval from the government.
