The protest caused the closure of the Strand | Five protesters dressed as Father Christmas stopped traffic in Liverpool to demonstrate in support of improved access rights for fathers. The men stood on the roof of a pedestrian walkway in Liverpool city centre on Thursday morning. They are believed to be members of Fathers for Justice, which campaigns for paternity rights. Five men were later charged with dangerous obstruction of a highway in connection with the protest. Merseyside Police officers were forced to close The Strand, near to the landmark Liver Building, causing rush-hour traffic delays. The group began their protest at 0600 GMT. Two of them came down from the building just before 1000 GMT, the other three came down just before noon. The men charged have been named as: - David James Humphrey, 30, of Manor Road, Crosby
- Stuart Peter Fisher, 38, of Dingle Lane, Dingle
- Gary Anthony Newell, 44, of Appleyards Lane, Chester
- Graham Ure-Wilson, 45, of Grovenor Road, Wallasey
- Peter Michael Molloy, 33, of Hartsbourne Avenue, Childwall
The men are due to appear before magistrates in Liverpool on 22 December.
