Soap star's missing girl appeal
Shafilea Ahmed
Police believe Shafilea is almost certainly dead
A Coronation Street actress has read song lyrics written by a missing girl, who detectives believe is almost certainly dead.

Shobna Gulati, who plays shop assistant Sunita in the Manchester soap, read two songs by Shafilea Ahmed at a news conference.

Shafilea, 17, disappeared from her Cheshire home in September after she had been taken to Pakistan for a family wedding.

Police are not ruling out the possibility she has been murdered because she had not consented to a marriage.

Her disappearance came after she apparently drank bleach while she was in Pakistan, in a possible protest about the idea of being forced in to a marriage.

She was left with injuries to her throat and stomach and spent five weeks in hospital before returning to England.

The songs were found in Shafilea's bedroom and speak of her unhappiness.

Desire to live is burning, my stomach is turning, but all they think about is honour
One song - titled I Feel Trapped - refers to a day when "everything changed".

Ms Gulati said she sympathised with the teenager's difficulty in balancing her culture with her upbringing.

She said: "She has obviously been unable to express herself in terms of her family and she probably talks like this to her friends, or she has written these songs in private.

"As far as I can see Shafilea may have been involved in some kind of marriage arrangement where perhaps she doesn't want to be in that arrangement."

Detective Chief Inspector Geraint Jones, asked if he had ruled out the possibility of an "honour killing", said: "That remains a line of inquiry."

But he distanced himself from the phrase "honour killing" and added: "It is not a phrase I have used and it is not a phrase I find appropriate.

"The phrase 'honour killing' is not something I have introduced but we have to investigate the possibility that Shafilea was killed because she has not consented to something."

Teacher's concern

Shafilea lived with her three younger sisters and one younger brother in the Great Sankey area of Warrington.

The home was searched by police and the family was said to have been co-operative.

It has previously been confirmed it was not her family who reported her missing, but a teacher at her former school.

Shafilea, known as Shaf to her friends, was last seen on 11 September.

Happy FamiliesI Feel Trapped
I don't pretend like we're the perfect family no more It was my last year in school, so happy with
Desire to live is burning my friends I got lots to do
My stomach is turning But came this day when everything changed
But all they think about is honour I came home it seemed like a normal day
I was like a normal teenage kid But sumthing wasn't right
Didn't ask 2 much I wish I coulda changed the event
I just wanted to fit in I shoulda killed myself instead
But my culture was different I'd rather have been dead
But my family ignored Coz now I have a burden on my chest
And no it won't go away, the guilt, the pain
I feel trapped so trapped, I'm trapped
(I don't know wot to do) I feel trapped
