Rooney escapes police charges
Wayne Rooney
Police said they will give Rooney "suitable advice"
Everton striker Wayne Rooney will not face police action for spitting on the pitch close to Liverpool fans during the Merseyside derby.

Several Liverpool supporters complained to police that 17-year-old Rooney spat at them during the tense match at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Video footage showed that the teenage England star did spit on to the pitch, but was several yards away from Liverpool fans at the time.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said Rooney will be "advised" about his conduct but no further action will be taken.

She said: "We have had the opportunity to speak with supporters, who have put their complaints forward.

"We have also had the opportunity to see a video recording of the incident.

"Wayne Rooney will be seen by a senior officer at the earliest opportunity, in the presence of his manager, and will be given suitable advice.

"No further police action will be contemplated once we have done that."

Everton spokesman Ian Ross said: "We are delighted the matter has been resolved."
