Rooney has always denied the newspaper's claim |
Wayne Rooney is to sue the Sun newspaper after it claimed he hit his girlfriend during a row at a nightclub. The England and Manchester United star has told his lawyer Keith Schilling to issue legal proceedings against the newspaper to sue for libel.
The newspaper claimed the 19-year-old slapped girlfriend Colleen McLoughlin, 19, while at the Brasingamens club in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, on 10 April.
Rooney has always strenuously denied the newspaper's claims.
The Sun claimed he had been enjoying a night with his fellow United stars when the alleged incident took place.
Ian Monk, Rooney's media adviser said on Wednesday: "I can confirm that as a result of their entirely false allegation that he hit his girlfriend, The Sun is being sued by my client."
A spokeswoman for The Sun said: "We have received a letter and the matter is with our lawyers."
