Student drops Rooney punch claim

A student who accused footballer Wayne Rooney of punching him in a nightclub has dropped the claims.

Patrick Hanrahan, of Eaglescliffe, in Stockton-on-Tees, alleged the England and Manchester United star attacked him in Manchester's Tiger Tiger nightclub.

The 22-year-old was said to have been attacked after taunting Rooney about his �28m move from Everton.

Gtr Manchester Police said on Wednesday he had since retracted his statement and no further action would be taken.

Denied claims

Mr Hanrahan was said to have shouted "once a blue, always a blue" at the 19-year-old - referring to Everton's team colours - in the early hours of 22 March.

He made a formal complaint against the player after giving his story to The Sun newspaper 16 hours after the alleged incident.

Mr Rooney had always denied the claims.

A GMP spokeswoman said: "We were informed that the complainant did not want to pursue the allegation.

"We took a... statement from him and officers will not be pursuing the matter any further."
