Police think victims may confide in hairdressers and bar staff

The staff are being trained by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to help customers report assaults using special incident forms issued by the force.

"We know that hate crime in Manchester is woefully under recorded, we need more people to give us an accurate picture," said Pc Sam Tennant of GMP.

The new scheme will be formally launched on 12 September.

GMP believe attack victims could be more willing to confide in people such as a hairdressers or bar staff as many seem reluctant to go directly to the police.

The information will be used to target problem areas.

The force hope to prevent incidents such as the one experienced by Marcus Adams, from Manchester.

"I got hit in my face and a piece of glass got stuck in my eye," he said.
