Michelle Dillon from the UK won the women's elite race |
Hundreds of the world's elite athletes lined up in Salford Quays on Sunday for one of sport's most gruelling events. The world cup event took place in the city for the second year - its first time in the UK was 2003 - on a course seen as one of the world's best.
Fundraiser Jayne Tomlinson, from Leeds who has terminal cancer, was among the 600 taking part in the Peoples' Race with her daughters Rebecca and Suzanne.
The athletes swam 1500m, cycled 40km and ran 10km.
In the women's race Briton Michelle Dillon finished ahead of Australian Miranda Carfrae and fellow Briton Liz Blatchford.
In the men's race, Briton Stuart Hayes, who is Dillon's partner, was second in the men's race, won by German Maik Petzold, with fellow Britons Tim Don sixth and Andrew Johns 15th.
Organisers of last year's event hailed it as a great success.
The course was primarily based within Salford with the swim and run finish taking place on the Quays in front of the Lowry arts centre.
The bike and run course took the race into Manchester and Trafford, passing the Old Trafford football ground, the Imperial War Museum North and Manchester's Albert Square.
