Triathlon draws huge numbers

More than 1,000 people took part in one of the largest triathlons in the UK on Sunday.

It is the fifth time that Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire has hosted the sprint distance event.

The race drew a large number of people keen to try triathlon for the first time.

Competitors swam 500 metres in a pool, cycled 23 kilometres and then ran five kilometres - without a rest between disciplines.

A Bath athlete won the event in a time of 61 minutes.

Stuart Curtis, 38, who races for Yeovil-based race team TRI UK, said he was "delighted" with the result.

"This has really given me confidence for the rest of the season.

"I've put in the training and it's great to get such a result."

Many of those racing raised money for national charities the NSPCC, Arthritis Research Campaign and Cancer Research UK.

Curtis will be heading to Swansea this weekend to take part in the elite national championships.
