MPs' bid to save Metrolink routes
Manchester tram
Three new routes were planned for Greater Manchester
Up to 20 Greater Manchester MPs are meeting on Thursday to find a solution to ditched plans for the region's Metrolink extension.

The group will be talking to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling, who announced in July the lines would be scrapped due to spiralling costs.

Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons said it was a serious attempt to find a workable solution.

She said 200m has already been paid out in preparation costs.

The councillors are to meet Tony Blair later this week to discuss the issue.

Three new routes were planned for the service, running to Ashton, south Manchester and Manchester Airport, and Oldham and Rochdale.

Homes and schools had been demolished to make way for the route expansion.

People who want to reinstate the expansion plans are planning rallies in Oldham and Rochdale later this week.

A rally will also take place in central Manchester on 16 September.
