Petition to get trams 'on track'

Three new routes were planned for Greater Manchester
People angry about the government's axing of the Metrolink extension are invited to sign a book of support.

Members of the public can add their names to the book at Manchester Town Hall from Monday 16 August, before it is handed to ministers in September.

Deputy council leader Jim Battle said: "We anticipate a great deal of interest from local people."

Mr Battle said more than 5,000 people have already signed up to the "Back on Track" campaign in local newspapers.

"We felt a book of support was a natural step, " Mr Battle added.

Metrolink is not an end in itself, it is a means to fulfilling wider objectives

Three new routes were planned for the Metrolink service, to run to Oldham and Rochdale, Ashton and south Manchester, including the airport.

Homes, schools and offices had already been demolished to make way for the route expansion.

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling announced last month that the expansion would not go ahead because it was proving too expensive.

But Mr Darling said 340m would be given to Transport for London to help improve transport to aid London's 2012 Olympics bid.

'Vital network'

Manchester City Council said it was an "appalling decision" and a "major blow" to Greater Manchester.

The Manchester Partnership, which brings together the main public service providers in Greater Manchester, along with local volunteers and the private and public sectors, announced on Friday it would lend its support to the campaign.

Representatives from Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Learning and Skills Council, Community Network for Manchester, Jobcentre Plus and the Arts Board NW are just a few of the organisations involved.

Mr Battle, who also chaired the Manchester Partnership Board meeting on Thursday, said: "The Manchester Partnership exists to enhance employment and transport opportunities, particularly for those in priority neighbourhoods, so it is vital the Metrolink network is extended to serve these areas.

"It will give our wholehearted endorsement and practical support wherever possible.

"Metrolink is not an end in itself, it is a means to fulfilling wider objectives."
