Three new routes were planned for the service, running to Ashton, south Manchester and Manchester Airport, and Oldham and Rochdale.

But Transport Secretary Alistair Darling announced in July that the expansion would not go ahead because it was proving too expensive.

Homes and schools had been demolished to make way for the route expansion.

A tram stop has also been built at the airport in preparation for the planned works.

Manchester City Council has called it an "appalling decision" and a "major blow" to Greater Manchester.

The campaign to reinstate the expansion is backed by community leaders, politicians, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Learning and Skills Council, Community Network for Manchester, Jobcentre Plus and the Arts Board NW.
