 Disposable nappies are clogging up landfill sites, says the council |
Parents are to be given traditional nappies as part of efforts to tackle landfill sites in Manchester. The city council wants parents to stop using disposable nappies which break down slowly when dumped.
Parents will get a free trial of reusable cotton nappies which will be delivered to their homes each week.
The nappies will also be collected and cleaned for a cost of �8.40. Disposable nappies can take between 200 and 500 years to decompose.
The UK produces about 3.5 billion disposable nappies or 800,000 tonnes of nappy waste per year.
Manchester City Council said this meant a huge cost to local authorities who have to collect this waste and send it to landfill.
It said much of this waste could be minimised by parents by choosing reusable nappies.
