New Year strike on Metrolink
Metrolink tram
Metrolink will offer a reduced service
Tram drivers are set to cause disruption to services across Greater Manchester, as they prepare to start a 24-hour strike on New Year's Day.

Members of the trade union Aslef have voted on the industrial action, in a dispute over union recognition.

The Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) is recognised by Metrolink bosses, but Aslef is not.

The strike means Metrolink's service will be reduced throughout Thursday, with no trams before 1000 GMT or after 1800 GMT.

Metrolink said the provision was "aimed to provide a comprehensive service for shoppers".

The company is urging people to allow more time for their journeys.

TUC agreement

Aslef district secretary Colin Smith said: "The drivers want Aslef to be recognised and will not put up with attempts by the company to bully and harass them.

"Our argument is not with the TGWU, but we believe the way forward is for the company to negotiate with both unions."

But Metrolink chief Phil Smith said the TUC backed the current one-union arrangement.

"The TGWU currently has exclusive negotiating rights for all Metrolink staff and Metrolink has no power to change this status," he said.

"We are intent on making every possible effort to reduce inconvenience to passengers and keep people informed."
