The second day of BBC Radio 1's One Big Weekend in Manchester went ahead.

Organisers called off Saturday's dance music event when the Heaton Park venue became waterlogged after days of heavy rain.

Thousands of disappointed music fans had travelled to Manchester for the dance acts.

The day was to be headlined by the station's own Judge Jules and was also due to feature Fergie, Eddie Halliwell and Alex Kidd.

However, Sunday's band event went ahead as planned with performances from The White Stripes, The Stereophonics, Manchester's Badly Drawn Boy, Dirty Vegas, Aqualung and Feeder.

Presenters Colin Murray and Edith Bowman broadcasted their show live from the park from 1300 BST.

Doors opened for the event at 1130 BST, and finished at about 1930 BST.

About 20,000 free tickets were allocated for the two days, but the 10,000 fans holding Saturday's unused tickets were not allowed in on Sunday.

Radio 1 bosses said Saturday's cancellation decision was taken on health and safety grounds.

Jason Carter, executive producer of live events, said: "We had to cancel the first day of our One Big Weekend event as the site was just too waterlogged.

"This was a massive disappointment for us and we would like to apologise to our listeners and to all those people who were due to come to Heaton Park on Saturday. "
