Judge Jules - the Ibiza interview
Judge Jules and Rajesh Mirchandani
Judge Jules: Clubbers must be educated about drugs
In this interview for the 4x4 Reports website, DJ Judge Jules talks to Rajesh Mirchandani in Ibiza about the island's drug and alcohol problems.

The BBC Radio 1 celebrity has been working in the sunshine club scene for the past 12 years.

He blames its excesses on the cheap cost of alcohol, irresponsible tour companies and the "anything goes" attitude of Britons abroad.

Man with pint of beer in the sun
"If you are mixing alcohol with drugs you're being dehydrated. You bring the sun into it and the fact that people are treating their daily 'getting wasted' as lunchtime through to 5 or 6 in the morning and it's a wholly different and dangerous equation."

Ravers
"People from Northern Europe live in an environment where it's crap weather all the time, you rarely see a glint of sunshine and there's no outdoor barbecue culture. If you go to countries where it's perennially hot like Australia people are generally more sensible."

Ecstasy
"One must educate people. There's no point in me as a spokesperson saying 'Don't take too many Es' because people will. Keep it at experimentation. I'm not going to try to preach an unrealistic message."

Ibiza street with pubs
"The tour companies are often getting money back from the pubs and bars they're taking the clientele out to. It's that sort of level of intoxication that I think makes people go out and take more drugs because their defences are reduced."

4x4 Reports: Dark side of the sun was broadcast on BBC One at 1930 BST on Monday 5 August and streamed live on this website.

Judge Jules
"I think people have the attitude, 'I'm abroad, therefore I'm invincible.'"
Judge Jules
"Drugs advisory bodies are pointedly advertising in destinations where drugs and alcohol are consumed in an unhealthy way."
Judge Jules
"At least in Ibiza the people are a little bit more clued up, a little bit more wise."
Judge Jules
"I think the tour companies are quite responsible for encouraging a binge culture."
