Coin-operated parking meters will disappear in May |
Coin-operated parking meters are to disappear from central London in May. The final five machines will be removed from Warwick Square in Westminster on 11 May, more than 50 years after they were first installed in the borough. The council said the removal of 4,000 machines started in 2007 after motorists began to pay for parking via mobile phone or credit card. Councillor Danny Chalkley said allowing motorists to use "cashless" parking had meant huge savings for the council. He said: "While the parking meter has a long history in Westminster stretching back more than 50 years, it's now time to look to the future and call time on its use."
