Parking meters to accept plastic
Westminster parking chief tries out new credit card meter
The new parking meters will accept credit and debit cards
Credit card parking meters have been introduced in parts of central London.

Seventeen machines are now in use in Westminster and if successful, they could spread across the city.

Westminster City Council hopes the machines will end the days of motorists searching for loose change and lead to fewer arguments with traffic wardens.

The highest concentration of the new meters - which currently still accept cash - are located in Harley Street and Wimpole Street.

Pay and display machines fitted with credit and debit card readers are now planned for the rest of London during the next 18 months.

Announcing the launch, Westminster's parking director Alastair Gilchrist, said it was proof the authority was determined to modernise the service it provided for drivers.

"We know how important it is to Londoners that we get parking right and part of that is making sure it is easy as possible for drivers to pay for their time parked on our streets," Mr Gilchrist added.
