The man who made sure the new Ascot racecourse was finished in time for Royal Ascot has been given a similar role for the 2012 Olympics. Howard Shiplee, 59, was named as the construction director for the London Games on Monday.
He will develop, lead and manage construction contracts, budgets and timelines for all permanent and temporary venues for the Olympics.
His job with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) starts in September.
Mr Shiplee said: "It is a great privilege and challenge to be offered this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help deliver the London Games.
'Lasting legacy'
"I am greatly looking forward to getting down to business at the Olympic Delivery Authority."
He is also responsible for helping the ODA live up to its role as an "intelligent client" via construction inspections, workmanship standards and best practice on site.
ODA chief executive David Higgins said: "Howard's work at Ascot has been rightly praised as showcasing British construction at its best - first-class facilities delivered to time and to budget.
"His experience will be invaluable in helping to deliver the infrastructure and venues for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as ensure we leave a lasting legacy."
Mr Shiplee is a former director of specialist construction consultancy High Point Rendel.
