Employers say workers enjoy some of the best terms in the industry |
Workers building a fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport have been offered a pay rise in an attempt to avert industrial action. Scaffolders, labourers and other workers are due to strike on Friday and Monday in a dispute over bonus pay.
On Tuesday, employers Laing O'Rourke offered a rise of 67p an hour - short of union members' call for 1 an hour.
But the GMB union said there is a "stumbling block" because of no agreed procedure to make offers to members.
'Positive proposals'
GMB national officer Phil Davies said: "Shop stewards have made positive proposals to resolve this matter and we are awaiting a response from the company."
Laing O'Rourke said its latest offer would confirm Terminal 5 workers enjoy the best terms in the industry.
"We would expect union members to accept the recommendation and agree to the new bonus offer," a spokesman said.
Terminal 5 is being built to the west of Heathrow Airport and is due to be completed in 2008.
