Police say some motorists are still prepared to drink and drive |
More than one in 10 drivers stopped and breathalysed in London over the festive period were arrested. Police administered 11,430 breath tests and 1,471 drivers were arrested for failing or refusing to take the test.
Specially-trained officers also carried out 31 drugs tests during December, resulting in 10 arrests.
Ch Supt Charles Griggs said figures "show that people are continuing to drink and drive, breaking the law and putting lives in danger".
The Metropolitan Police's crackdown on drink and drug driving ran between 1 December 2005 and New Year's Eve.
Ch Supt Griggs said the campaign had led to a number of "dangerous and irresponsible drivers" being taken off the capital's roads.
