Anti-drink drive campaign begins
More police will be on duty in London to combat drink-driving in light of extended licensing laws.

The Metropolitan Police's anti drink -drive campaign, led by the Traffic Unit, will run throughout December.

Throughout the night extra officers will patrol drink-drive and speeding related crash hotspots.

Early morning patrols will check for drivers over the drink-drive limit from the night before. Random vehicle checks will also be carried out.

Drug testing

Officers will give drivers advice on alcohol and drugs as well as using new powers to detect if people are driving under the influence of drugs.

Drivers can now be prosecuted for refusing to undergo drug-drive testing, known as Field Impairment Testing.

Last week, tube passengers at Leicester Square station were offered breath tests in an attempt to reduce alcohol-fuelled trouble in the run up to Christmas.

Passengers were given kits designed to register whether a person is over the legal limit to drive.

In 2003, there were 1,300 alcohol-related collisions in London, of which 40 were fatal.
