The number of homeless people living in temporary accommodation in London has more than doubled over the past eight years, according to a survey. London Housing Federation (LHS) said 62,640 people were waiting for either a council house or housing association place, up from 24,330 in 1997.
LHS estimates that London needs up to 20,000 new affordable homes a year.
Berwyn Kinsey, of the LHS, called on the government to build more houses in the capital.
"London's ongoing housing crisis is due to historically low levels of house building over the last decade.
"There's only one way to beat homelessness and solve the problem of overpriced housing, and that's to drastically increase the number of new homes being built in London."
