A homeless charity is appealing for more than 3,000 people to volunteer at its Open Christmas centre in London. Housing charity Crisis is seeking qualified electricians, plumbers and other skilled manual labourers to help prepare in the run up to Christmas.
The eight-day scheme will be offering a range of services, including medical, study courses and other advice.
Last year's annual Christmas event was held at the Millennium Dome, where more than 700 people were given shelter.
'Transforming lives'
Shaks Ghosh, chief executive of Crisis said: "Crisis Open Christmas provides comfort for homeless people at a very difficult time of year.
"Through the services we provide, from hair dressing to training opportunities - it inspires people to transform their lives in the New Year."
According to an online survey by the charity, nearly 61% of Londoners say they feel differently about Christmas this year because of events such as the London bombing and the Tsunami.
Out of the 2,000 respondents, 20% said they were more likely to volunteer this Christmas as a result, while 6% said they already do.
