1.42m funding for church repairs
Eight London churches are set to benefit from up to 1,424,000 funding for repairs.

Churches in Islington, Merton, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets are to receive the money from the English Heritage and Heritage Lottery Fund.

The other churches are in Westminster, Camden and Hackney.

The grant package is for repairs to Grade I and II listed churches in London. It is part of 17.5m given to religious buildings in England.

'Future generations'

The London churches to receive funding are Grade I listed churches St Barnabas in Westminster and St John in Tower Hamlets.

The Grade II* listed churches are St Mary Magdalene in Islington, St Peter and St Paul in Merton, St Giles in Southwark, the Priory Church of the Rosary & St Dominic, and St George The Martyr in Camden, and St Bartholomew's Church in Hackney.

Richard Halsey, Places of Worship Manager at English Heritage said: "The grants announced today should fill the funding gap faced by congregations in maintaining some of England's finest buildings.

"In return, the public is guaranteed access and we can pass on this national inheritance in good repair to future generations."

The majority of the buildings were built in the 18th Century.
