Toddlers taught safety on roads

The children will be urging drivers to slow down
Children from an east London nursery are taking part in a road safety awareness day.

The 39 toddlers from Leapfrog Day Nursery in the Docklands will be taught the importance of holding hands and the word 'stop' as part of Beep Beep! Day.

Supervised by adults with banners, the children aged up to five will also call on drivers to slow down around nurseries, schools and homes.

Eight under-16s died on foot and 295 were injured on London's roads in 2004.

The campaign has been launched by national road safety charity Brake and roadside assistance company Green Flag.

Mary Williams, from Brake, said: "Many of the 303 children killed and seriously injured while on foot in London last year were mown down in their own neighbourhoods by local drivers.

"We're calling on all London drivers to help make roads safer for kids on foot or bike by sticking within speed limits at all times."

Any nursery can register to run their own Beep Beep! Day.
