Mass arrests in blitz on violence
Domestic violence
Domestic violence accounts for 25% of all London's murders
Ninety seven people have been arrested as part of a London-wide police operation to crackdown on domestic violence and "hate crime".

Among the arrests made on Tuesday morning, 87 were for domestic violence, including threats to kill.

Police said the public needed to know how widespread the crime is - domestic violence accounts for 25% of all murders in London.

More than 300 police officers were involved in Operation Athena.

'Suffering in silence'

The day-long operation also aims to encourage victims to report crimes.

Police officers across London's 32 boroughs will host related community activities.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve House said: "The public needs to know that these crimes make up a huge proportion of crime in the capital and it is their friends, neighbours and family who may be suffering in silence.

"We want to encourage victims to come forward and have the confidence that police will deal with all cases sensitively and abusers to know that their partners silence no longer protects them."

Hate crime includes racist, homophobic, disability or faith-motivated abuse as well as abuse targeted at elderly or vulnerable adults by family members or carers.
