The 85 metre towers with 35m blades which will make up London's first major 'wind park' have also been approved by Havering and Barking and Dagenham councils.

They will provide 100% of the electricity requirements of the new assembly hall being built to produce diesel engines at the plant.

Each turbine generates about enough electricity to power 1,200 homes and along with a similar turbine in Norfolk, are among the tallest in the UK.

Plans for a third 65m tower with a viewing platform which could provide power for local homes and businesses, also won approval.

The councils will now issue notices to finalise the procedure and it is hoped construction will be completed by the end of the year.

London mayor Ken Livingstone said: "The scheme will make an important contribution towards making London a more sustainable world city.

"I hope it will encourage other large organisations to consider developing similar schemes on their premises."
