| Friday, 13 July, 2001, 00:04 GMT 01:04 UK Ford reveals Dagenham engine plans ![]() The final Fiesta model will roll off the line in February The Ford motor company is set to unveil plans to build a hi-tech centre for the production of new diesel engines at Dagenham. It will be the first major new building on Ford's east London estate for 30 years. The site already produces the engines for all the company's diesel vehicles. But Ford is spending 350m on developing the new engine manufacturing factory because it believes diesel sales will grow strongly.
Together with the petrol engine plant in Bridgend, Wales, it will power a quarter of all Ford vehicles. But the investment comes as the company winds down vehicle production at Dagenham. The final Fiesta model will roll off the line in February.
Another 1,300 will go by the time production ends. Ford says it wants to add 500 jobs over the coming years, although internal company documents obtained by the BBC suggest that some of these are actually just transfers from other parts of Ford UK. |
