Gas turbine maker cuts more jobs

An engineering firm is cutting almost 50 jobs at its manufacturing operation in Lincoln.

Siemens has announced 48 redundancies as part of a global strategy to stay competitive, officials said.

The firm employs more than 1,700 staff at several sites across the city making gas turbines.

A spokesperson said the move was part of a long-term strategy to cut costs globally. The firm will start a consultation process with unions.

The firm is also transferring the manufacture of some components currently made in Lincoln to external suppliers.

The firm announced 190 job cuts in July 2007, but some employees took voluntary redundancy, Siemens spokeswoman Carol Price said.

The turbine maker is one of the largest private employers in the city.
