Organisers hope to find some Roman treasure

The project at Greetwell Road Spinney will clean up the area and concentrate on finding remains from a Roman villa.

Stewart Goodacre, leading the clean-up, said they will be looking for coins, pottery and other artefacts.

"This is the site of one of the largest Roman villas, and one of the last to be occupied by a senior Roman official," he said.

"If anyone wants to help with the clear out they are more than welcome to help - it is not every day that you realise you are possibly sitting on Roman treasure."

He said some Roman artefacts were found in the area after the World War II when houses were built.

Lincoln, known in Roman times as Lindum, was founded in the mid 1st Century AD.

Mr Goodacre said: "Things have been found over the years - it has all been documented and put on a database - we are confident we will find something.

"As with any historical find, we will report it and it will be dealt with in the proper manner."
