Rubbish changes are wheeled out
Alternate weekly rubbish collections are to be wheeled out in Lincoln.

The proposals form part of the first major overhaul of the city's waste collection in more than 30 years.

Residents who can store large wheelie bins for recycling and non-recycling waste will have each bin collected every other week.

It follows consultation with about 10,000 residents. Environment boss Ian Taylor said: "It's a huge step forward for waste services in Lincoln."

The city council's executive committee has also voted to replace the current black bag system with wheelie bins.

Spin-off benefits

Residents who can only accommodate smaller bins for recycling and non-recycling waste will still have weekly waste collections alongside a fortnightly recycling collection.

A survey will now be carried out to find out which areas of the city can accommodate the changes.

Mr Taylor, environmental promotions manager at the council, said the move would help to clean up the streets, with fewer split bags.

The changes are expected to be introduced in April 2006.
