Recycling rates in Lincoln have doubled in the past two years, according to city council figures. The recycling rate for the city shot up to 24.4% of all the waste collected from April 2004 to March this year.
The council said it compared to 17% in 2003/04, and just under 12% for the previous period.
Council leaders said the city's recycling rate was well on the way to being 30% in a year's time - the target set by the government for 2005/06.
Over the past 12 months about 2,500 tonnes of recycling was collected through the kerbside collection service and a further 1,300 tonnes deposited at recycling sites around the city.
Council recycling officer Barrie Billinghay said: "This is great news and thanks must go out to the city's residents who have actually given us all this material.
"However, we do need people to continue with their recycling habit and to hassle their friends and neighbours if they still throw away their papers."
