The decision was made despite a report by planners supporting the development at Connisholme Fen.

More than 170 residents wrote letters expressing fears over noise, proximity to an area of natural beauty and a possible impact on house prices.

The public gallery burst into applause when East Lindsey District Council voted 15-5 against the application.

Planning officers had argued the scheme should be approved but under special conditions.

More than 100 people attended the meeting, which saw some councillors argue the project was "completely unsuitable" for the area and would ruin views of the Wolds.

Seven letters in support of the scheme were also submitted, with supporters saying that no negative effects had been noticed at a similar project near Mablethorpe.

Ecotricity, the firm behind the plans, was not represented at the meeting but is expected to appeal the decision.
