A community in Lincoln is to be policed by two community officers on push bikes bought by residents. Beat officers had been policing the Ermine estate in patrol cars, but the residents of the estate wanted a more approachable style.
So they raised 700 for two push bikes, which were provided by the manufacturers at cost price.
The police authority has agreed to provide the officers with special clothing and to maintain the bikes.
The bikes will enable community beat officers to cover a large estate and still be available for informal contact with residents.
Officers are said to agree with residents about the bike solution.
Residents had been asking for bicycling bobbies for a year before they managed to raise the money themselves.
