Lincolnshire Police say they urgently need people to put forward their dogs to be trained to work in the force. Officers recently put a request out on BBC Radio Lincolnshire because of their shortage of dogs - but so far they have had no response.
They say the dogs they need could cost as much as �1,000 and they cannot afford to buy them.
The demand for trained dogs has increased as they are used for jobs like and arson and bomb detection.
Breeding centre
Pc Andy Durham, a Lincolnshire police dog instructor, said he was disappointed no-one had come forward.
"It will mean us possibly going out and buying dogs at quite a bit of expense to the force which eats into the relatively small funds the dogs section has for the purchase of equipment, feed and vets' bills.
"Gifts from the public mean a lot to us because it means the budget will be freed up for other things."
The Association of Chief Police Officers is consulting forces in the UK about a national breeding centre.
