Holiday makers are blamed for dropping most of the litter |
Rubbish left on Lincolnshire's beaches is being cleaned up and surveyed. The annual Beachwatch, organised by the Marine Conservation Society, has become the most extensive monitoring programme in Europe for coastal and marine rubbish.
Volunteers will be working on the coast at Skegness, Moggs Eye, and Crook Bank, removing all litter and recording what they find over the weekend.
In 2002 almost 25,000 items of rubbish were picked up from beaches around the UK.
It was found that 40% of the litter was left behind by holiday makers while 15% was left by people fishing.
Only 2% was found to come from shipping.
The survey in 2002 showed an increase in the amount of rubbish left on Lincolnshire beaches.
