Over 14,000 vehicles use the road each day |
Plans for a long awaited by-pass in south Lincolnshire have been given the go-ahead by councillors. Permission has been given to improve the A1073 between Spalding and Eye, subject to Government approval.
The new road will miss out the village Cowbit but some people living nearby are angry with the proposals saying the route will be longer than the existing one.
They also say it will be more dangerous and will destroy important archaeological sites.
'Rat-run'
The Cowbit Road Action Committee have suggested an alternative route but the Chairman of the group, Doug Braybrooke said: "We did not have a chance to display our route as the exhibition was cancelled due to foot and mouth.
"The approved route goes further around, uses more land, takes more maintenance and goes through archaeological sites.
"Cowbit will have a road on either side of it and we believe the old route will become a rat run. "
The current road which is the main route in south Lincolnshire has 14,000 vehicles travelling on it every day.
Alan Freeman, head of planning and conservation at Lincolnshire County Council told the BBC: "The new road which will be totally new and not just improvements to the current route will provide a much better link to the A1.
"It will particularly affect the food producers who regularly transport crops from south Lincolnshire."
