Church counts cost of vandals
St Wulfram's Church, Grantham
Vandals recently caused 4,000 damage at St Wulfram's Church
A vicar in Lincolnshire says the rising cost of vandalism is driving up the cost of church insurance.

The Reverend Christopher Andrews, rector at St Wulfram's Church in Grantham says it may soon become difficult to insure some churches.

Mr Andrews said vandals caused at least 4,000 of damage when they threw stones at stained glass windows at St Wulfram's Church.

Lincolnshire County Council church tourism officer Rosemary Watts said: "You are spoiling something for ever more when you damage a church window.

"Nothing can quite replace a stain glass window - the colour is never exactly the same."

Isolated locations

Mr Andrews says the recent attack was one of several in the past few months, and reflects a concern that town centre churches are being increasingly targeted by vandals.

"You can't help feel sorry about the people who are doing this," he said.

Inspector Dick Holmes of Lincolnshire Police said alarms and CCTV can help.

He said churches are vulnerable because they are sometimes isolated and not overlooked by housing.
