Leicestershire Police have launched a dedicated answerphone to collect information on people who repeatedly drink and drive. Officers want callers to give details of persistent offenders as part of a summer drink and drug driving campaign, which runs until 30 June. A total of 139 drivers were caught over the limit in the 2007 summer crackdown. Those caught drinking and driving face a prison sentence of up to six months and a fine of up to 5,000. Insp Vivienne Brenchley said she hoped the public would help the campaign by using the new answerphone service. "This year we want to encourage members of the public to report drink and drug drivers by increasing the ways in which they can contact us. "The new answer machine service is aimed at those people who know someone who regularly gets behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol and want to tip off the police before someone is hurt or even killed. "We would urge you to call the Road Policing Unit direct on 0116 248 2017, leave a message and include as much information as you can, such as the person's name, what car they drive, where they live and where and when they could be caught drink driving," she said.
