Teens help with drinking campaign
Underage drinking is being tackled in Rutland by officers discussing the problem with teenagers face to face.

The police, along with Rutland Youth Services and the Community Safety Partnership, said the problem gets worse during summer holidays.

An alcohol consumption questionnaire has also been compiled so youth workers have a clearer idea of drinking habits.

In addition officers will hand out bags with an alcohol unit counter and information on safe drinking.

Extra patrols

Bags will also contain a spikee - a plastic bottle cap which prevents the drink being tampered with or spiked with alcohol.

Sgt Paul Coughlan, from Rutland local policing unit, said: "Our crime analysis shows that anti-social behaviour is mainly committed by young people between the ages of 12 and 16.

"We hope this campaign will encourage them to think about the dangers of underage drinking and make them think about their behaviour and how being drunk might affect others."

As part of the same campaign, a series of test purchasing operations are also planned at pubs and off licenses in the coming months and extra high visibility patrols will be in place in Oakham and Uppingham on Friday and Saturday nights.
