A long-awaited bypass around a Rutland town has finally got the go-ahead after months of uncertainty. The scheme will see 11.6 million spent on the three miles of new road avoiding Oakham town centre, which has become increasingly congested.
The plans had prompted a four-day public inquiry in September last year where, despite some objections, most people spoke in favour.
Work on the scheme is expected to start soon and be completed in early 2007.
Rutland County Council Leader Roger Begy, said: "It will make one heck of a difference.
"Anyone who has been through Oakham, with its level crossing and pinch point just past the crossing, knows the heavy lorries and heavy traffic that goes through their makes life pretty difficult and is sometimes gridlocked."
