Crackdown on summer alcohol crime
Leicestershire Police have launched a summer blitz on alcohol-related crime.

The initiative - codenamed Operation Harlequin - will run for the remainder of July and August. Trading standards officers will also be involved.

It will target illegal sales to people under 18 and incidents of violence and anti-social behaviour.

A similar crackdown last summer saw more than 200 people arrested, 120 fixed penalty notices issued and more than 300 visits to licensed premises.

'Get personal'

Police said both violent crime and anti-social behaviour historically increased during the summer and was often linked to increased consumption.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Eyre said: "Whilst we want people to enjoy the summer months, we intend to get personal with those people who persist in blighting others' lives by drinking too much alcohol, becoming violent or anti-social.

"We will be working with partner agencies, such as local authorities and trading standards, to combat this type of alcohol-fuelled crime.

"We will be using a number of tactics, including high visibility patrols by officers and the use of fixed penalty notices and powers of dispersal."

He added that test purchase operations at licensed premises by under-18s would also be used as a tactic to ensure compliance with the law.
