Melton Mowbray's pork pie makers have seen off another challenge by food producers to use the famous pie's name. Local pie producers want protected geographical status - the same European backing as Parma ham and Champagne.
The Leicstershire town is backed by Defra and has an application lodged with the European Commission.
But Northern Foods said this was unfair. It lost its High Court appeal in December against Defra's move and a bid to overturn that ruling has failed.
"Good news"
Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association chairman Matthew O'Callaghan said: "This is good news not only for the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie but also for other regional foods.
"We've now fought in the High Court and the Court of Appeal and have won.
"I hope Northern Foods now drop their opposition to our application."
A Northern Foods spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the decision and we are reviewing our options. We will issue a fuller statement at a later date."
The company has factories across the Midlands and the north of England.
