 Campaigners want protection for the locally-made pies |
Pie makers outside Leicestershire could be banned from Monday from selling their produce under the famous Melton Mowbray name. Local campaigners have been battling to persuade the European Commission (EC) to award "protected geographic status" to locally-made pork pies.
They say that would prevent outsiders from cashing in on their reputation and undermining the genuine article.
The EC could deliver its long-awaited decision on Monday.
Protected geographical status is enjoyed by many products including Rutland bitter, Welsh lamb, Cornish clotted cream and champagne.
Stilton cheeses, which come from the same area as Melton Mowbray pies, are also on the EU's list, although cheddar has been judged too generic.
