More people are working in a Leicestershire town than anywhere else in the country, statistics reveal. Melton Mowbray, which has a population of around 25,000, has an inactivity rate of 7.7% compared to the national average of more than 20%.
Ward councillor Matthew O'Callaghan said it was due to the area's "resilience" in dealing with setbacks.
The inactivity category includes people of working age who are jobless, other than the unemployed.
Inactivity rates include people who do not work because they are long-term sick, looking after families, or are students.
People claiming unemployment benefit in Melton Mowbray is 0.9%, compared to more than 4.6% nationally.
The town has the lowest rate of people claiming this benefit, in proportion to population, than anywhere in Great Britain.
Since the late 1990's Melton Mowbray has suffered a series of economic setbacks including the closure of Asfordby Mine and the knock-on effects of foot-and-mouth disease on the town's cattle market.
