Doctors believed Harriet had only days to live |
A 13-month-old baby girl who was given just days to live has undergone a liver transplant, hospital officials said. Birmingham Children's Hospital said Harriet Stobbs, from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, had an eight-hour operation on Thursday night.
Hospital chief executive Dr Sandy Bradbrook said: "Harriet has received a donor liver, but it is too soon yet to tell whether it was successful."
Harriet's parents made an appeal for a liver donor earlier this week.
Huge response
Harriet has a rare blood group - AB - which makes the chances of a donor matching even less likely than normal.

"Hospital staff and Harriet's parents have been deeply moved by the immense response on the part of the public and are extremely grateful for the offers of help they have been receiving from as far afield as the Czech Republic," Dr Bradbrook said.
"The organ donor register has received over 700 extra calls in the past two days as a direct result of the interest this has created.
"We should also not forget that Harriet has received her new liver as a result of someone else's tragedy - our thanks go to the family of the donor in particular."
Her parents Kath, 33, and Rob, 30, appealed to people earlier this week to join the Organ Donor Register to give their daughter a chance of life.
Harriet has spent most of her life in hospital after being born prematurely.
She developed a bowel problem during treatment, causing liver failure.
More than 6,000 people in the UK are currently waiting for an organ transplant.
