Free locks are being offered to people with older cars |
People living in southern Leicester may be in line for an early Christmas present from the police. An operation to cut car crime will see Stop Locks handed on residents who own a car registered with an E to M prefix.
The project covers Aylestone, Saffron, Eyres Monsell, Gilmorton, Clarendon Park, Knighton and Stoneygate.
Pc Aftab Yasin said: "Thanks to funding from the Leicester City Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, we have a number of Stop Locks to give away."
Visible measures
Police want to raise awareness of car crime and advise people to park in a secure car park, or at least on busy, lit roads.
PC Yasin said: "An additional deterrent is to always immobilise your car if you can.
"If a would-be thief can see visible security measures, such as a steering lock, it could put them off breaking into or stealing your car."
Beat officers will be available between 1300 GMT and 1500 GMT on 29 November at Christ Church, Clarendon Park Road, Leicester, to offer advice and issue packs on reducing car crime.
The first 30 visitors presenting a vehicle registration document, proving they are a local resident, and owning an E- to M-registered vehicle will receive a free Stop Lock.
